&SONS Bacaro

Impromptu lunch at &Sons Bacaro yesterday was the perfect antidote to cure the Monday blues! I wish I had my camera with me but since it was a spontaneous date, the phone came in handy!


Lunch deals start from $8++ for hearty plates of pasta, salads and ‘land or sea’ main courses. K had the grilled chicken supreme with roasted potatoes ($8++) while I chose red snapper with radicchio ($10++) over the salmon escalopes which I’m definitely gonna try next! Both dishes were well worth the price, in terms of quality and quantity. We also shared the baccala cod cakes with sea urchin sabayon ($15++) from the ala carte menu and those delightfully crisp savoury black balls easily convinced me that return is a must!

Serving Italian styled western cuisine, Sapori D Italia (previously known as Vintage Chef) stuck out like a sore thumb in the Bishan neighbourhood coffee shop. Go ahead and give it a try though! Price tags are affordable for the quality and quantity, plus plating and presentation are not overlooked.

Mushroom soup was blah (read: diluted and watery), salad greens had unsightly holes (obviously not the freshest) but we were suitably impressed with the mains. My double slabs of grilled seabass were as crispy as K’s battered pork loins were tender. We like!

Vegetarian food is no big deal but when it’s raw, creative and delicious? Enter Afterglow – a plant-based, farm-to-table eatery with a cool, industrial vibe complete with the ubiquitous bike-hanging-on-the-wall thingy which cafes seem very fond of these days. I really enjoyed the food but our bill was rather pricey for the quantity. Hopefully we will see more copycats of Afterglow around soon – healthy competition is always a good thing!


I love the fake “cheese” here simply because I do not like real cheese! Made of cashew nuts and blended with herbs, the texture was creamy (kind of like a thick and coarse version of hummus) and easily spreadable on the raw dehydrated crackers. Lovely dish to share.

Between the kimchi and achar rolls, I prefer the latter! Packed neat and tight with blended nuts (yes, a lot of nuts used so don’t think you won’t get full eating rabbit food!), the pineapple within made it fruity and refreshing while the kimchi was too pungent for me.

This may be one of the most tasty bowls of rice I’ve ever had! The dressing was magical and extremely flavourful that I kept snatching it from K. We have already agreed to order this as takeaway in future and buy some sashimi to make our own perfect chirashi hahaha.

Besides Maple and Market, there’s a new dessert cafe (or more specifically, a gelateria) near my house yay! The Hideout sells an array of artisan gelato made fresh daily with no preservatives and (what else but) waffles, of course.


Honestly, most of the flavours tasted rather average (chestnut, matcha and pistachio were disappointing) but we managed to settle on the three better ones – mao shan wang, salted caramel and dark chocolate ($10). I must remember to ask them not to pour the colourful sprinkles and marshmallows on my gelato next time. Hate those artificial stuff.

I’m so glad that the recent food fad involves lobster rolls and not something chicken/beef/lamb which I don’t take. After being bombarded by the wonderful food porn on Instagram and food blogs, I’ve finally succumbed (yes, I’m weak when it comes to food) and had my virgin lobster roll experience at Platypus Lobster Shack! This place has been churning out lobster rolls for about a year (way before the craze started) so they must be doing something right!


We were lucky to be seated at the counter where a “live” show was going on. Lobster rolls were deftly assembled with ease, laid out on trays with care, and promptly delivered to the hungry diners (including me)!


Before the main highlights, we shared a bowl of thick and creamy bisque. Least memorable because the other dishes were just too awesome!

Urchin & Lobster Bisque ($16.90++)

I was very curious about the crustacean bowl (limited quantities available daily) because I couldn’t quite picture it in my mind upon reading the description. This is probably one of those controversial love/hate dishes but for me, it turned out to be a really brilliant combination of lobster, rice, cheese, uni creme and caviar! Beautifully presented too. The taste reminded me of aburi sushi, believe it or not. Try and you will know what I mean!

Crustacean Bowl ($19++/starter or $26++/main)

You can order the lobster roll as a standalone roll ($19.90++) or as a set which comes with a small side of truffle crisps and salad ($22.90++). Compared to the other restaurants serving lobster rolls, this is definitely one of the most affordable options in town!

Each roll holds approximately 100g of lobster meat and because I’m not a small eater (K always say I eat more than him!), I can easily down two at one go haha. It’s a good thing that there are so many different varieties on the menu – which means that I can feast on lobster rolls without getting bored!

The Traditional ($22.90++)

The traditional is a must-try for first-timers like us! The toasted bun was not the best around but still an adequate vessel for the butter-poached lobster meat tossed in roasted-garlic mayo. Simple and good!

Spicy diablo was our favourite, partly because we went crazy pimping it with burnt cheddar (additional $4++) and double lobster meat (additional $16++). Yes, double lobster meat omg!!! Our big fat roll was overflowing with all kinds of deliciousness, period. Words are superfluous.

Other add-on toppings include fresh wasabi creme, caviar, shaved truffles and sea urchin creme.

Spicy Diablo ($19.90++ without add-on toppings)

I’m honestly not a mayo lover so I was initially worried about not liking the rolls (ya, foodies will worry about such #firstworldproblems haha). If you are like me, fret not! There are two mayo free options on the menu – piquant garlic and the more intriguing red miso and sesame. Flavour was naturally sweeter and a welcome change from the mayo loaded rolls. I wanna try the garlic version next!

Here’s an open secret: there’s off-menu food items, such as the luxurious uni roll! Just ask for it!

I really wanted to like The Rustic Bistro but nope, I’m firm about not wanting to go back again. Nothing impressive about the food and though all prices are nett, some dishes are clearly overpriced to me. Like the slow cooked salmon, supposedly a main course but arrived looking pathetically thin. Nothing like what I saw on Instagram, sad. Mini chocolate lava cakes were honestly too tiny and the sweetness made me think of cheap chocolate. The fried starters were average, though the mushroom fritters could do with more “truffle”. Likewise the lack of flavour in the chilli crab pasta. No one made any negative remarks about the pork belly pasta, sticky date pudding and tiramisu (complimentary from the chef, thank you) so those passed, I guess.

Oblong Ice Cream

The one and only reason why we found ourselves inside Oblong at Serangoon Gardens was because of their awesomely late closing hours — 12am on Sundays to Thursdays and 2am on Fridays to Saturdays! Despite the late hours, it was crowded and noisy when we reached at midnight. I heard from one of my Instagram friends that the waiting time for the popular red velvet waffles can take up to an hour! Luckily we didn’t order any, phew.


We had our usual triple scoops (even though it was already past 12 hehe) and after trying almost all the flavours, we picked baileys (had a last minute change of heart about chocolate stout which was very good too), coffee almond and pistachio salted caramel. I love the creamy and smooth texture, a great contrast to the nutty bits in the latter two!


Salted caramel molten lava cake!! When we saw this on the menu, I went “I want!!”

Please do not make the same mistake as me. The cake was a joke (sorry to be so mean) haha. As small as my palm (I have small hands, FYI), minimal lava flow (what you see below is what you get), and the weirdest thing was the lack of salted caramel taste! I felt confused while eating it and K said it was one of the worst cakes ever in his life #melodrama

Just stick to the ice cream! Be there or be square!
