Ok I wasn’t intending to eat cakes today (it’s eat-clean Monday!) but I had to go to the bank in Shinjuku and you know, Isetan with the Mont St Clair pop-up booth is so near. Couldn’t resist sugar, I’m weak like that haha. This time I found a stunning gem in the orange mont blanc cake! Oh my, so glad I tried this (the guy before me bought the last one yesterday so this is fate!!), the balance between chestnut and citrusy orange is incredibly delicate. 5 cakes for 2 girls — that’s what happens when foodies-with-sweet-tooth meet. Really pleased with the calories spent at Pâtisserie Asako Iwayanagi パティスリ アサコ イワヤナギ, a chic neighbourhood boutique shop with beautifully crafted desserts. It’s impossible to choose a favourite out of the houjicha-raspberry tart (a surprising combi!), nutty chocolate slice, pistachio-cherry cake, and matcha-white chocolate terrine. I’m not a fan of sakura desserts but the sakura mont blanc is too pretty to miss.

Guess what, even after 5 cakes, I didn’t feel full at all. That’s the beauty of Japanese desserts — always so light yet satisfyingly rich in flavours.

Incorporating vegetables in cakes? Now that’s Libertable taking “healthy living” to the next level. There’s a few funky flavours such as pistachio with dill (or fennel, I can’t tell), caramel with sake, and apple with foie gras. My mont blanc came with porcini mushroom and thankfully the latter was more subtle than in-your-face to complement the sweet chestnut. I didn’t fall in love with it; it was forgettable and the meringue base could be crispier.
