My heart sank when the staff at our regular breakfast spot Gontran Cherrier told us that the matcha pastries are no longer in season. Whatttttt, how can that be!! Matcha season has barely started! Upset, but still kind of happy with the default chocolate almond croissant.

On a side note, the Shibuya outlet has closed so go to the Shinjuku branch!

Ok I wasn’t intending to eat cakes today (it’s eat-clean Monday!) but I had to go to the bank in Shinjuku and you know, Isetan with the Mont St Clair pop-up booth is so near. Couldn’t resist sugar, I’m weak like that haha. This time I found a stunning gem in the orange mont blanc cake! Oh my, so glad I tried this (the guy before me bought the last one yesterday so this is fate!!), the balance between chestnut and citrusy orange is incredibly delicate. There’s also a hazelnut cake in the background but it pales in comparison because chestnut wins anytime!

It was second time lucky with ca ca o カカオ, a chocolate specialty shop from Kamakura. The website listed Shinjuku NEWoMan as one of the two Tokyo branches but I couldn’t find it a few days ago. I’m now 100% sure it had shut down unless someone tells me otherwise. So when I walked past the other outlet at Lumine, I ain’t leaving without getting myself some choco treats of course! The soft serve made from Colombian beans was excellent, as was the bittersweet 61% dark chocolate ganache tart with a delightfully smooth filling and firm buttery crust (albeit I prefer a thinner shell).

Cassis in mont blanc? I tried one such combination from Patisserie Jun Ujita パティスリー ジュンウジタ and it was surprisingly good. Slightly tart berry flavour, sweet chestnut puree, moist almond frangipane-ish base, sweet tooth satisfied! Worth trying if you see his cakes popping up at Shinjuku Takashimaya food hall; otherwise his main patisserie is quite far out of the main Tokyo area and I’m not in a hurry to head there.

Walked past the Potasta ポタスタ outlet at Shinjuku Lumine Est and the tightly packed sandwiches with generous amount of filling caught my eyes. Most are savoury with a lot of greens (e.g. scrambled eggs and tuna) but I wonder how the sweet ones will fare (pumpkin with white chocolate hmm)… I didn’t feel adventurous so the safest dinner choice for me was the wholemeal sandwich with beans and kinako. So fragrant with the roasted soy and the texture of the whole beans was just right, not mushy at all!
