Finally, finally, finally!!! After 3 visits to 3 different Pierre Hermé‘s outlets in 3 different cities (read: London, Paris, Tokyo), I’ve finally managed to get my hands on his seasonal white truffle & hazelnut macaron at the Selfridges’ counter in London.
White truffle ice cream, white truffle crème brûlée, I’ve tried those before. But never in a sweet macaron and I had my doubts initially. What if it’s just an overrated macaron? Then again, this is Pierre Hermé we are talking about. I should have known better!
The first bite gives way to a strong earthy taste that’s somewhat disconcerting, but thereafter the nutty hazelnut flavour comes into play and the whole combination of sweet and savoury just works. Truffe Blanche & Noisette, you are one special macaron!
Of course, one macaron is never enough. I also had a lovely Coing & Rose (quince & rose), Arabella (a new creation of milk chocolate, banana, passion fruit & candied ginger), and my favourite Marron & Thé Vert Matcha (chestnut & matcha green tea)! Love them all ❤
I love PH’s white truffle macaron too 😀
PH is pretty bold with the white truffle there. The scent of truffles is actually pretty strong but it still tastes great for whatever reason
And you seem to be going london pretty often, I’m jealous!!
Nice..not everyone got the chance to eat macarons by him..You prefer Laduree or his?
Whoa, that looks intriguing! Haven’t seen that one at all at the PH counters here in Tokyo. Yesterday I stumbled across a Sebastien Bouillet macaron counter at Seibu Ikebukuro, and I was pleasantly surprised. The nougat flavor is to die for! I took a few pics of them here:

oysterdiaries: I totally agree! Love it too. Haha, and ya, about once a month. I’m definitely not complaining =p
ZQ: PH!! You can read about my comparison here: https://myfoodsirens.wordpress.com/2010/06/27/paris-laduree-vs-pierre-herme/
So-So Good: Hey, SB’s macarons sound good from your description (great blog, by the way)! Will note it down, along with Koji’s. P.S: Do you have any recommendations for foodie haunts in Narita?? I’ll be there for a day next week and need serious help!! Haha.
Narita…do you mean the airport or the nearby town/suburb? I’m guessing the airport, and actually there are a number of yummy places to eat…people who live in town in Narita usually just hop a local train to eat at the airport LOL. Best picks: Tonkatsu Wako (my fav tonkatsu chain, terminal 2), Tentei (pretty good tempura, go for the seasonal or vegetable tendon rice bowl, terminal 2), Sanbei for good, classic soba/udon (terminal 2), Soup Stock Tokyo (terminal 1), and Tsukiji Sushi-Iwa (terminal 1).
BTW, glad you like the blog! Thanks very much!
Oh no, sorry for the confusion, I mean Narita town. Will be staying at Narita Port Hotel so I guess that’s in Narita city? Or do you guys call her a town? Haha. Anyway, I think there’s an AEON mall nearby. If there’s nothing much to do/see/eat in Narita, I’m guessing I’ll probably spend the afternoon at the mall LOL.
Ooooh got it. Well, unfortunately Narita town (or maybe city? haha) is not known for its dining options. You’ll probably come across the usual, expected chains. But some people have told me that the little hole in the wall places in the side streets can have some awesome food there, especially the sushi/sashimi and donburi joints. Good luck!
Although, there IS a pretty decent/very cheap gyoza place there called Gyozanosho (don’t remember where exactly, but I think it’ll be easy to google). There is also a Brazilian place called Teco Teco (I think!) which is supposed to be pretty good (the chef is actually from Brazil). I haven’t eaten there myself but I’ve heard it mentioned once or twice, so it might be a good option if you’re in the mood for a heavier meal!
