The Humble Loaf is back!!

Okie, not really because they have morphed into GastroSmiths – a brand new bistro/bakery with an expanded menu. Same same but different!

2014_08_16

We (or at least, I) felt sad when Humble Loaf shut its doors previously as it meant that we lost a favourite brunch spot for simple sandwiches and delish sous vide eggs. So we were really happy that both items were kept on the new menu, albeit “upgraded” ones using better quality ingredients. Everything tasted as good as we remembered!

Not-So-Humble Eggs v2.0 ($9.50++)
63° eggs, jamon serrano, pickled celery, onion puree, toast

Pricing has increased quite a lot, especially after the evil double ++ oh man. Fret not though, we heard that the prices will be revised further (down, not up please) so I’m staying hopeful~

Sea-ly Eggs ($10.50++)
63° eggs, scottish smoked salmon, marinated nori, chilli oil, toast

One of the prime reasons why we loved Humble Loaf so much was that the quality and different varieties of breads were fantastic! Think rye walnut, black bamboo charcoal, chia seed multigrain etc. Sadly though, there’s only plain brioche toast available (for now) – not my favourite but I shall wait patiently…

Smoked Salmon Sandwich ($14.50++)
french butter, dijon mustard, scallions

Cappuccino ($4.50++)
Highlander Coffee

Both the smoked salmon and mushroom eggplant sandwiches were incredibly satisfying! I’ve got no doubt that we will be forever sticking to these two even though there are also chorizo or prawn sandwiches on the menu. No need to be adventurous when we already know what we like haha.

Mushroom Eggplant Sandwich ($12.50++)
truffle vinegar, gruyere, roasted garlic

Guess what, we went back again last Saturday – exactly a week later!

We ordered pretty much the same items – our favourite sous vide eggs and smoked salmon sandwich. Noticed that two (instead of one) slices of toasted bread were served this time? Yep, apparently they’ve received feedback that the portion is not substantial enough so more carbs for all of us from now on yay!

I wanted to try the original seafood medley on the lunch menu but bummer, they were out of cod fish. So the chefs whipped up a delicious “version 2” using scallops and prawns. I love it! To think they were so worried that it won’t be to my liking – it’s genuine customer service like this that makes us want to go back all the time!

Basque Seafood Medley v2 ($18++)
scallops, prawns, squid tentacles, pickled cucumbers, sun-dried tomatoes, chilli oil

See those deep fried squid tentacles? As addictive as those from Old Chang Kee!
